UNDO Establishes Kingston Operations to Scale Carbon Removal Technology

Kingston, Ontario – September 16, 2024 – UNDO, a UK-based carbon removal company, has officially launched operations in Kingston, Ontario, strengthening its ongoing partnership with Canadian Wollastonite. In the second phase of their collaboration, UNDO plans to spread 50,000 tonnes of wollastonite across agricultural lands in Ontario.

At a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at Canadian Wollastonite, Mayor Bryan Paterson cut the ribbon to mark this significant milestone for the company and the region. “This new investment is absolutely in line with the city’s vision, our strategy, and our values as a community,” said Mayor Paterson. “Kingston is passionate about sustainability, and partnerships like this one are a perfect example of how we are tackling climate change. Kingston may be a medium-sized city, but we think and act globally, and it’s exciting to welcome companies like UNDO that align with our goals for a sustainable future.”

Since 2015, Canadian Wollastonite has been at the forefront of researching the carbon capture potential of wollastonite. Working with institutions such as the University of Guelph, Yale University, and Trent University, the company quickly recognized wollastonite’s unique ability to sequester carbon through enhanced rock weathering. Early research demonstrated that wollastonite captures CO₂ from rainwater at a rate nearly ten times faster than other minerals. Over the years, this pioneering research has led to over 15 published studies worldwide and has helped establish a new industry focused on using wollastonite for carbon removal and soil enhancement.

“The partnership with UNDO is synergistic,” said Bob Vasily, President & CEO of Canadian Wollastonite. “Canadian Wollastonite will focus on producing a low-carbon mineral for enhanced rock weathering, while UNDO provides the technology to measure and verify carbon captured from the atmosphere.”

The City of Kingston has strongly advocated for sustainability and innovation in climate action, and this partnership perfectly aligns with its climate goals. “The City of Kingston has the strategic target to become a net zero community by 2040. We need companies like Canadian Wollastonite and UNDO, and the prospect of large-scale carbon storage, to achieve our goals,” said Paul MacLatchy, Environment Director, City of Kingston.

“Canada is rich in agricultural land and minerals. The potential for Canada to remove millions of tonnes of carbon per year is unmatched,” said Jim Mann, UNDO’s CEO & Founder.

This partnership also contributes to Kingston’s economic development strategy, which focuses on attracting foreign direct investment in sectors aligned with sustainability. “The partnership with Canadian Wollastonite and UNDO builds on Kingston’s values of sustainability and supporting our green economy,” said Donna Gillespie, CEO of Kingston Economic Development Corporation. “This initiative not only celebrates a local business but also welcomes new foreign direct investment, bringing cutting-edge technologies to help us reduce our climate impact and support our rural economy.”
